I recently toured this long ago closed prison and I must say it was shocking and ghostly. Incredibly, some women were sent here for adultery. I have a few photos I will post in the coming days. In the meantime, read about it here.

I agree: these prisons can be scary. I always feel that when I visit the former Gestapo-prison in Cologne [nowadays known as Ell-De Haus]. It sends shivers down my spine.

I have hopefully rescued this comment from my spam folder. The very thought of visiting the prison in Cologne sends shivers down my spine as well.

Beautiful shot, have you tried to convert it to Black and White? All that texture in the walls and floor is stunning.

Thanks. I have not tried to convert this one as I like the rust. But I agree….it would look great.

A tough, tough place would be an understatement. The prison was recently featured in a repeat episode of Ghost Adventures on the Travel Channel.

Yeah, that would be one scary freaking place at night. It’s scary enough in the day.

Excellent photo Mike, it really does have a creepy feel – even as a photo. Looking forward to the other shots. đ

Mike, there is a old Prison down in Philadelphia,Pa that looks very similar to this one. Named the Eastern State Penitentiary. It’s a old Prison and kinda spooky to be there. It’s known to be Haunted by Al Capone and other Spirits from the past.

Yes, Eastern State is known to be another haunted hell hole. Good for taking photos.

Eastern State did have Al Capone stay there for some time. He was reported as being haunted by one of the Gangsters that were murdered in the St. Valentines Day Massacre. He would scream “Leave Me Alone” many times.

That’s what I scream in my sleep with the addition of several expletives. Apparently I am haunted too.

Such an unusual subject for you Mike. It reminds me of the convict prison ruins at Port Arthur in Tasmania. Horrendous places. âšī¸

I sees it, I shoots it, as I like to say (thanks for giving me the opportunity.)
The world is full of horrendous places. You ain’t one of them.

I’ve been watching a lot of old TV westerns lately — it’s cool to see a real-life place that’s often mentioned on the likes of Tales of Wells Fargo and Gunsmoke! đ

Yep. Or, I reckon so, as Josie Wales would put it.
The modern day tales of Wells Fargo is about a very large corporation screwing the little guy every chance they get. More of a horror show than a Western.

Reminds me a bit of the interior of Building 5 in Folsom State Prison.
