After several days of hard evening rains, this is what appeared up against my large cottonwood tree. I guess this kind of clustering happens at the base of a tree. Does anyone know what kind of mushrooms they are? I wish I could eat them all, with butter.

Dunno what they are but I agree, they look tempting!

I love mushrooms, but it would take 3 experts in my yard eating them first.

Whatever her name was who wrote the book about finding edible wild mushrooms died from eating the wrong one. I think I’ll stick with the grocery store! Great shot.

Ha. Kind of like a seasoned marathon runner having a heart attack.
Thanks, Marilyn.

Be careful if you eat them my friend, you might start seeing things 🙂 (I mean more than normal).

Ah, the 60’s. One way to get them back, I suppose.

Looks like apartment condos for the wee creatures of the forest. Love this photo Mike.

Well the condos did not last long. Hope they signed a very short term lease.
Thanks Sue.

oooh, your pretty ‘shrooms look remarkably similar to the ones I saw in many places along the Camino last fall. I’ll take a look at my notes and let you know asap! (did you know I’m writing a book about my Camino?)

I did not know about your book, but I think it will be well written and I’d like to hear a bit more about it….
Do let me know about my shrooms, eh.

I had a friend who ate wild mushrooms (even described in books as poisonous). Last time I saw him he was alive and well. But…it was 40 years ago.

Hopefully he is still alive and well, albeit much older.

Only 40 years older. 😉

Do you think it’s safe to say this summer Colorado won’t be struggling with a drought? Mushrooms, special brownies….we do live in Colorado after all 🙂

Too early to say if there will be a drought. If I had to guess I’d say it will be too hot, too dry, and we’ll be dealing with fires again. I’d like to be wrong.
Special brownies indeed. I once made a batch, many years ago, that were so bad I had a gag reflex with each bite. Then Judy and I got on a plane a flew to New York. 3 1/2 hour trip felt like 25 minutes. I guess the brownies sold today are delicious. Might have to go get me one.

Hmm, could be interesting. I routinely make ‘normal’ – ‘regular’ brownies and I wanted to share a couple with a camp host that had been particularly nice. He looked at me very quizzically as he accepted the plate. I’m not sure if he ever tried them as he avoided us after that. I guess those of us with Colorado license plates are viewed questionably. Perhaps he was disappointed 😉

I have read of people with Colorado plates being pulled over by the police in other states and being harassed and searched. That’s not so cool.
And you, you are way nice. Brownies indeed.

Well, something is going to kill me. I’ll let it be old age, and shy away from my mushroom feast. You saved my life, and now I am your champion.

Mushrooms make some of the most interesting photos, not to mention tasty treats. My father was a big shroom hunter but I wouldn’t know one from the other.

I love mushrooms. I would like to taste a truffle too, but probably couldn’t afford it.

I agree they are some sort of Armillaria – on cottonwood likely not edible like honey mushrooms on other tree species. Regardless, they are a symptom of the decline of the tree. If it is in your yard or near a structure, you’ll want to watch closely.

It is in my yard and it is in decline. It got hit real hard in recent years by early winter snow storms. That, and it is an old tree.

Alas I do not like mushrooms one bit, but I like the idea of them magically popping up. I’m not a very good vegetarian I guess. Lot’s of restaurant’s offer non-meat items but often throw in mushrooms as a meat alternative. Yuk, skip supper….bring on desert 😀

My darling spouse does not like them either. But she likes me and that makes me a lucky chap.
