We are enjoying some time in South Dakota and my wonderful wife found a nice adventure for us. At the top of this road are many rocks and we came away with two buckets of what hopefully will turn out to be beauties. Life is good.
Thanks, Mike, for mentioning that book. I think it might make a very interesting read for me as I know about “surviving the fatherland” from what my parents told me.
Outside of Custer there is a tiny remnant of a town called Fairburn. From that town we went on a dirt road for miles until we came to the entrance to the agate beds. We then went down a road or two and through a stream and then we were on this hill where the photo was taken. We then proceeded to the agate beds on either side of the mounds you see at the top of this photo. There might be an easier way to get there but we started at the town of Fairburn and asked how to get to the agate beds.
Good luck.
Life is good, eh? Excellent

That’s a track that begs to be driven or walked just to see what there is beyond that furthest ridge

Hi Andy. I did drive it, 4 WD. Just beyond the ridge the road stops. We hunted for rocks at the top, which had rich fields of varying rocks.

It was a very fun day which produced a bunch of agates that will get polished at some point in time. Thanks.

It was a fun trip and we did come home with some nice agates. Oh, and we went with a 4 wheel drive, but the right car could well manage it.
