Snap! Maybe it works like a Flinstone mobile. You just stick your foot out to brake. I’ve always loved the Bugs and wish for one in a yummy green/blue. Alys had one in College. I have one on my board at Pinterest.
I am glad I wasn’t in this particular Beetle when the one I was in rolled twice down the interstate in 91′. Hell of a ride but in this car I would have zero chance of survival. Great shot Mike, Love the B&W!
Not to bad really considering the thing didn’t have working seat belts. I had a bruise the size of my fist at the base of my skull, moderate whiplash plus a few stitches on my chin. I also had a foot print on my face where the driver stepped on my head to get out the car. Oh and the battery broke loose and fell out of the Beetle’s drivers side back side window that popped out.
Talk about rundown things sparking fond memories! You do know how to find them Mike. We had a Dodge station wagon that seated 9 first and then went to a “bug.” Could this be it?
I owned one of those Bugs, a red one. They were the days you could easily do a tune-up, set the points, change the oil, all in less than an hour. My four kids used to ride in the back window well when they were toddlers. I’d be arrested for that today. Always started no matter the weather, was good in snow, and didn’t mind a beer-bump or two on a late night home from the pub.
Yikes! But does it get good mileage?

The aerodynamics are off a bit and it runs rough. Additionally the dashboard is missing so the mileage involves some guesswork.

Really interesting shot, and B/W certainly does it justice. Doors are over-rated anyway.

Thanks Shawn. If it was mine I would have someone duct tape me to my seat.

I had a brand new one in 1974. Paid $1900 for it. It was orange and a pretty good car actually.

I’m sorry I haven’t visited in a while but I love your new banner photo! This VW, no seat belt? Duct tape is a good alternative, as you mention!

There was a time when me or a friend would have adopted that old bug and fixed her up. I guess it’s too late now, poor thing.

Too late for me as well. Perhaps some brave soul will take it on.

A fixer-upper! Great chassis for a kit car.. if there’s any chassis left that is! 🙂

It was all chopped up but the chassis is still there, for the most part. 9:36 pm where you are?

Great stuff Jim. Nowadays I think bugs have become more a chick car, or at least I see few men driving them.
